Pgs. 32-33; Alex Ross painter; 11" x 17"Few artists in the history of the medium have been able to capture the grandeur and scale of larger-than-life mythologies quite as well as Alex Ross, one of the reigning titans of modern comics. His gift for humanizing the gods-on-earth of the comic universe were nowhere better utilized than in the monumental Marvels, the groundbreaking series that presented the events of the classic Silver Age Marvel tales through the eyes of the civilians who acted as backdrops to the original stories. This clever conceit allowed Ross to craft a startlingly-realistic tableau that evoked the honesty of Rockwell, the tactile immersion of the Renaissance master and the vibrant zing of Neal Adams. Though his influences are many and apparent, his style is unmistakably his own, and this stunning pair of pages showing the Fantastic Four s classic confrontation with Galactus and the Silver Surfer, as well as portraying the relatable day-to-day lives of the citizens of the Marvel Universe. His flawless intuition for color is especially apparent as the searing-red palette of this piece practically burns the eyes, placing us in the same awed and astonished frame of mind that the street-level characters must have surely been in. Ross pieces at auction consistently command top prices, and any original art collector will certainly cherish these fantastic examples of modern comic art at its very finest. Both pages are in good conditon.
