DESCRIPTION
ow/white pgs; 2 pcs of tape on int. cvr; cf dtch
2nd appearance of Batman; Kane, Shuster, Guardineer art (6/39)

Batman’s historical second appearance in Detective Comics #28 still couldn't get his picture on the cover. That didn't stop Bob Kane and Bill Finger from building the mythology of their shadowy new hero. DC was also savvy enough to add a cover banner promising The Batman was appearing “this month and every month." None of that kept Detective #28 from years of being undervalued — later leading to this book becoming a truly scarce collectible. Times were changing, however, and Fu Manchu would be making his final appearance with Detective #28. By the time this issue roared off the stands and into adolescents' back pockets, DC was no longer uncertain about the potential of their new superhero.
This handsome copy bears a typically pulpy cover illustration by Golden Age mainstay Fred Guardineer involving the kind of hard-boiled action the title was known for previous to its long-lasting association with Batman. This book is impressively crisp and bright, and presents as a higher grade than it's current designation.

Although the Caped Crusader does not appear on the cover, other than in text form, make no mistake, this is a true landmark issue, any fan of the Batman's exploits should have this book near the top of their wish list. Typically not an easy issue to obtain in any condition, this classic and highly collectible book should really see some serious bidding once the auction gets into full swing.

Overstreet Guide 2015 VG/F (5.0) value = $12,500.

Artists Information

Joseph Shuster was a Canadian-American comic book artist best known for co-creating the DC Comics character Superman, with writer Jerry Siegel, in Action Comics #1.

A celebrity comic artist of the Golden Age, co-created Batman and Robin with Bill Finger, as his brainchild became more in demand he hired an army of ghost artists to illustrate the dearth of Batman features on the market, but all were credited to Kane. His other achievements include the creation of Catwoman, Two-Face and cartoon character Courageous Cat. Kane was the object of some controversy for taking credit for the art and inspiration of others, but he was also undoubtedly an important figure in the history of comics. He published an updated version of his autobiography "Batman and Me: The Saga Continues" shortly before his death in 1998. He got his start at the Eisner/Iger studio and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.
