Superman wasn't the first superhero in comics to be referred to as “The Man of Steel.” Zip Comics’ star Steel Sterling was the first to employ the moniker, as can be seen on the very cover of issue #6. MLJ Magazines was the imprint that is best known for bringing Archie Andrews to the world. Before striking gold with the teenage humor star, MLJ (like many of the other comic book publishers of the time) put out a series of anthology titles in hopes one of their characters would take off like Superman. Charles Biro’s distinctive style is on full display on this classic cover, with Steel dragging Nazis out of a U-Boat that had obviously torpedoed a civilian vessel, which was a huge problem at the time and helped open an avenue for America to join WWII.
This impressive Near Mint book is the second-highest graded of only 17 copies in the CGC Census. The colors on this cover are incredibly strong: purples, pinks, reds, greens, and blues contrast smartly with cooler gray and brown tones that are a step above the average covers being put out at this time. The construction of the book is stable, with a nice spine and corners; there is very little in the way of noticeable wear on this 84-year-old issue, which should make it a target for Golden Age investment bidders looking for interesting and rare pieces for their portfolios.
