After some hit serials for the Man of Steel, Superman became National (later DC) Comics' first superhero to star in a feature film with 1951's Superman and the Mole-Men . The project would end up being a success for National on both the big and small screen. George Reeves' portrayal of Superman soon had him starring in the Adventures of Superman television show, with these early legal documents revealing how National had already used Superman's clout to cash in on the first film!
These five documents reveal National's 25/75% split with Lippert Pictures for the U.S. distribution of Mole-Men. National made a good deal with Eros Films Ltd. for the UK distribution, as well, with a 30/70% split. These documents also mark the change of title for overseas distribution, with Mole-Men becoming Superman and the Strange People. (That would also become the new title of the episodes when the film was later re-edited into a two-part Adventures episode, with all references to mole-men removed.) Eros stayed in the Superman biz, too, with another deal showing the same percentages for two more feature films pieced together from Adventure episodes.
