George Evans Jr. art; hanging panels
This extraordinary document is not only a piece of comics history, but of African-American history, being the first comic created and published by black comic artists for a black audience. Devised by journalist Orrin Cromwell Evans in 1947, All-Negro #1 was posited as an alternative to the all-white, often racist comics otherwise populating the newsstands, and was aimed to provide young black readers their own role models and heroes, sorely needed in that pre-civil rights era.
This extraordinary comic is a piece of African-American history. It was the first title published and created by black comics artists for a black audience. Less than a hundred copies are known to exist and this is an exceptional example. The paper is a supple, cream to off white. The inks on the front cover are very rich with tremendous color saturation. Serious scholars and collectors will surely delight in this rare opportunity to own a piece of history.
