Sheldon Moldoff cvr/art; 1st app of King StandishLike Harold Lloyd to Superman's Charlie Chaplin, the Flash was the streamlined, all-American, charismatic response to the dark, adolescent power fantasies represented by the Man of Steel, Batman, and Captain America. Always smiling, always broad-shouldered, and unfailingly charming and eager, Jay Garrick's football-playing science whiz raced effortlessly through adventure after adventure, giving off the can-do spirit that kept America from hitting rock bottom throughout the Depression and subsequent war years. It's interesting to note that, despite the immediate popularity of the character, DC hedged its bets as it had with Action and Detective, rotating Flash's appearances on the covers with backup heroes in attempt to curry favor for these aspiring characters with as many readers as possible. No matter, this just meant readers were treated to exciting genre images from the likes of Shelly Moldoff, whose cover to issue 3 remains a classic even without the Scarlet Speedster.
This 5.0 Flash Comics #3 retains stunning form with its clean edges and well preserved hues. A Golden Age book with such vibrant colors and light pages is a very rare find indeed!
