Luke with lightsaber with Artoo & Threepio panelsRuss Manning only drew seventy-four Star Wars Sundays between 1979-1980 before health issues forced other artists to take over, ultimately leading to a run by Al Williamson, who was primarily known for his work at EC. Manning's untimely death in 1981 left collectors with precious little choice material available in the investment market.
Star Wars Sunday #39 is arguably the best entry from the "Tatooine Sojourn" storyline. This page begins with a great R2D2/C3PO panel, in which they commandeer an iconic Jawa Sandcrawler. Luke wields his lightsaber in three panels, including the large final panel. Manning only used this splash format in a handful of Sundays. What true Star Wars fan can resist a Sandcrawler battle scene! It is important to note that Marvel Star Wars art has skyrocketed in value and it may be only a matter of time before these Manning Sundays do the same, especially with Disney+ planning on releasing a slate of Star Wars related series.
