Mask Comics #1 offers a visionary cover that's established L.B. Cole as one of the most remarkable artists to work in comics of any era. Cole's bold, bright style would make him one of the earliest comic artists to be considered seriously by critics, employing a range of skills that he'd developed at the University of Berlin. That included Cole's visionary use of "poster colors" as primary colors against black backgrounds.
This quasi-psychedelic cover art for Mask #1 is a prime example, and remains one of the most sought-after books from the Golden Age. The cover for Mask #2 is equally impressive, but this issue holds a particular draw for serious collectors. The book has more than earned a well-deserved place among the most important issues of the Golden Age — as a true artifact that goes for staggering numbers even at lower grades.

Mask Comics #1 is a very popular auction book, which is beloved by Golden Age collectors, being one of the prime examples of the immense talent of L.B. Cole. There are just under 80 copies of this comic on the CGC boards, making it a very difficult comic to come by, even for bidders with deep pockets. So it is always a big deal when a copy of this classic comes up for auction, in any grade. This particular copy is an impressive 7.5, with only six copies higher up the ranks, four of which are restored. The book has bright colors, and is nice and clean, hailing from the original owner Bobby Blue Collection, this is the first time this copy has gone up at auction, so be prepared for a real feeding frenzy if you intend to compete for this special GA treasure. An 8.5 copy of Mask Comics #1 sold for $144,000 in March 2023.
