Superman 1938 Syndicated Strip Contract Drafts for Jerry Siegel & Joe ShusterSuperman became an instant hit with the April, 1938, debut of Action Comics #1. By September of that year, Detective Comics, Inc. -- who'd already paid co-creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster $130 for the rights to the character -- were putting together a deal with the McClure Newspaper Syndicate for a daily Superman comic strip.
This lot features both the first and second drafts of the contract, each dated September 22, 1938. The document details how Siegel and Shuster were responsible for the script and artwork, with McClure having an option to renew with Detective if "the weekly net share...of the proceeds reaches $100, or more." These rare internal documents are accompanied with a handwritten memo citing they come "From [Jacob] Liebowitz," who would become a National (later DC) Vice-President after the company acquired Detective Comics, Inc. (along with the rights to Superman).
Rights to the artwork, storylines and characters reverted to Detective, of course, with the company quickly cashing in on their initial investment. Siegel and Shuster's pay rate for providing the story and art isn't specified--with the contract simply stating, "The Artists are to be paid for their work solely by Detective."
