1936 Superman Rejection Letter from M.C. Gaines to Jerry SiegelThis rare legal document (believed to be from a 1947 lawsuit) preserves one of the most important rejection letters in comic book history--as publishing pioneer M.C. Gaines informs Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel that he hasn't "been able to do anything as yet with Superman, nor with any of the other material" sent in by Siegel and Superman artist Joe Shuster.
The legendary letter is dated June 2, 1936--just years after Gaines had created the comic-book industry by repackaging comic strips as small magazines. Fortunately, Gaines' assistant Sheldon Mayer would remember the Superman strip, and suggest that Gaines recommend Siegel and Shuster's creation to National Comics when the company solicited scripts for what became the first issue of Action!
Action Comics #1 was published on April 18, 1938--with the introduction of Superman forever changing the comic book industry. A wiser Gaines would soon partner with National on other projects. He also brought in Gardner Fox to create a super-speedy hero for Gaines' own All-American comics line--with 1940's Flash Comics #1 launching another classic title in the Golden Age of Comics.
