Superman Co-Creator Jerry Siegel Mocking Telegram Over Green Arrow Story IdeaSuperman was a huge success for National Comics (later DC), but co-creator Jerry Siegel was never happy about it--remaining resentful that Siegel and artist Joe Shuster sold the rights to their character for $130 in 1938. This telegram (dated Dec. 16, 1947) is a rare vintage document from Siegel's continuing feud with National executives, while referencing World's Finest #32 from 1947.
That issue included a Green Arrow story titled, "The Case of the Camera Crimes!"--involving a criminal mastermind ("The Director") who uses films of recreated heists to train his gang. The name of the original scripter remains unknown, but Siegel was eager to let National VP Jack Liebowitz know that he wasn't too impressed. Siegel used Western Union to alert Liebowitz that he liked the idea in "latest World's Finest," but adds "it was even better when I submitted it to [editor Mort] Weisinger for Superman." (Siegel would later write that National could have avoided a future lawsuit if Liebowitz had done more to keep his scripts from being rejected by editors Weisinger and Whitney Ellsworth.)
