The “Picture Novel” “It Rhymes With Lust” was an early precursor to what would eventually come to be known as the graphic novel in comic book circles. This digest-sized book was put out by St. John Publications, one of the scrappy imprints that jumped into the fray of the Golden Age of comics marketplace. St. John was known for publishing comics based on previously successful entities like Mighty Mouse and Abbott and Costello, as well as a spate of scandal magazines like Manhunt and Verdict, and they also dabbled in other genres like western and family-friendly funny animal comics. One of the main claims to fame amongst knowledgeable collectors is St. John’s relationship with Matt Baker, one of the most highly collectible artists of the era, known for his sumptuous Good Girl Art, and also his historical importance as one of the first black artists to work in the industry. Baker’s talent is on full display on the cover of this book, which incorporates elements of fine art and commercial advertising illustration. Baker's books are going for mind-blowing prices as the market and respect for his work have grown by leaps and bounds in the past few years.
