Jerry Siegel Letters

This scrawled letter from a raging Jerry Siegel provides disturbing insight into the Superman co-creator's troubled relationship with National Comics (later DC) after the company bought the rights to Superman for $130 in 1938.

Siegel had launched a bizarre poison-pen campaign against National executives in late 1951, blaming them for leaving him "destitute." Just a few years later, Siegel would be trying a different tone with National exec Jack Liebowitz, pleading with him in a letter dated March 24, 1953, for more work with the comics company that Siegel had essentially launched.

Just two months later, however, Siegel would send this angry letter to Liebowitz's majestic home in Great Neck, NY (as seen in the original included envelope)—using the engagement of Liebowitz's daughter as an excuse to blast Liebowitz once again.

Siegel notes that Liebowitz's future son-in-law is from University Heights in Cleveland. "ONCE I lived in University Heights, Cleveland," rants Siegel, "in a nice home until a rotten injustice ruined my life and career." Despite this bizarre artifact, however, Siegel would still later return to the ranks of DC in 1959.
