Superman Creator Jerry Siegel Poison-Pen Poem Sent to National/DC Executives
bitter poems sent by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel to threaten National Comics executives with cooperation over plagiarism lawsuits
Jerry Siegel LettersThis troubling letter from Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel is a rare artifact from one of the most vicious feuds in comics history -- as the writer continued his 1951 poison-pen campaign to shame the National (later DC) Publications brass who'd bought the rights to Superman for $130 in 1938!
Siegel was already targeting National Comics VP Jack Liebowitz with other "Christmas Curse" letters where he blasted the National brass for leaving him "destitute." Some of those letters included a poem titled "Because of You." Amazingly enough, Siegel then sent the poem out again under separate cover to fill their mailboxes with missives of guilt.
That's seen in this letter (postmarked Dec. 12, 1951, on the included envelope) mailed to Liebowitz at National's offices. This is a chance to own of the few original copies of this lost work by the legendary comics writer, as preserved by the original involved parties: "Because of YOU/There's no food in the house/Because of YOU/Superman/Is a louse..."
