Jack Kirby cover; 1st app & partial origin of Wonder Man (Simon Williams); Official series announced ft. Wonder Man for Disney+.
Looming large in the Avengers' mythos, Wonder Man began life as one of the group of villains who had a bone to pick with Tony Stark (billionaire weapons manufacturers tend to step on a few toes), as his family business was pushed out of the marketplace by Stark Industries. In Avengers #9, Simon Williams aka Wonder Man attempts to exact revenge after being enlisted by the Avengers' evil nemesis Baron Zemo. After discovering he'd been played as a pawn by Zemo he decides to change sides and help the superteam, which causes his own (temporary) demise (see Avengers #102).


Wonder Man's first appearance, alongside the Masters of Evil, on the cover of this issue is rendered with the typical skill and dramatic flair Jack Kirby was known for in the early days of Marvel's Silver Age, aided by the talents of Chic Stone, this cover is a classic of the nascent Avengers, showcasing the debut of a future lineup mainstay.
