Watchmen was once referred to as “the moment comics grew up,” internationally recognized as a work of literature, which has been placed in Time Magazines “100 Best Novels” list is beloved by critics, comic fans, and people who have never seriously read comics before in their lives. The story of the Watchmen concerns the murder of an old school superhero named the Comedian, and the ensuing investigation into the murder by anti-hero/vigilante Rorschach, the various character’s in the story are all retired heroes, thanks to the caped crimefighter shutdown by the government, with one exception being the godlike blue being Dr. Manhattan. The issues take a close look at the personal lives of superheroes, and indeed, the whole genre of hero comics, with a witty and dark prism. Placed in an alternate future where the U.S. won the Vietnam War and Richard Nixon is still president in 1985, the lot bounces around in time and place, while adhering to a strict panel structure, and there are a whole bunch of small details stuffed in to the edges of the frame, as well as a text feature to end each issue. Watchmen was a sensation upon its release in the late 80s, making Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons comic book celebrities, the series was adapted into a successful film directed by DCEU fave Zack Snyder, and was expanded into an HBO series, based forty years after the original events of the comics, that was met with more accolades. The first issue is a good investment book, but the entire series is a must read for anyone who claims to love comics, there has rarely been an achievement like it in the history of the art form.
