classic Syd Shores WWII Hitler, Goering, and Goebbels cover; 1st app. Leopard Woman

Captain America Comics #36 offers yet another classic WWII cover from Syd Shores, with a true hat trick of real-life Nazi villains getting their comeuppance. Syd manages to work in Hitler, Goering, and Goebbels for an enduring artifact of how comics balanced the horrors of World War II with ridicule for its architects. The looks of shock and bewilderment on the faces of Adolph and his toadies (while Bucky blasts away with a machine gun) make for an indelible image of the Golden Age — exposing the Nazi threat as a joke when confronted with the might of American muscle and daring.

Human Torch and Toro show up inside the issue to investigate some Hollywood homicides. Captain America has two stories; the first has the sole appearance of the doomed Dr. Necrosis; "The Strange Mystery of the Leopard Woman" introduces a feline female (and Nazi spy) who'd later appear in the pages of Marvel Comics to terrorize Wakanda.

There are only 81 copies of this classic Golden Age Axis cover listed on the CGC Census, with this 7.0 example very near the top of the boards. The book has retained its fresh appearance over the decades and presents a healthy color palette with purples, greens, yellows, and reds popping off of the page. The iconic Hitler-snatching art is one of Syd Shores’ most memorable works. Comics with covers featuring the villains of WWII are perpetually in demand, and typically go for impressive numbers when they appear at auction.
