Tales of Suspense #33 features classic sci-fi and fantasy from some of Marvel's greatest talents (Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Marie Severin, Dick Ayers) while also serving as a Silver Age curio of Marvel's transition into becoming the House of (Super) Ideas. We're six issues away from Iron Man making his debut in the fantasy anthology, but there's a big clue of what's to come in the classic "I Was Trapped in the Chamber of Fear!" Stan Lee writes himself into the story as the editor being pitched a fantastic tale, and Kirby's final page has a poster of the Hulk in the background.

Hey, it's the first Hulk crossover! It's also a foreshadowing of Marvel's strategy to introduce superheroes into all their established anthology titles after the success of Fantastic Four #1. ("Marvel Comics Group" was literally a set of comics that distributors sent to retailers, with Marvel's former fantasy books enjoying a sales revival alongside Fantastic Four as characters like Ant-Man and Thor took over the pages.)

Tales of Suspense #33 was released less than a month after Spider-Man broke out in Amazing Fantasy #15, as well. The book represents a veritable “Who’s Who” of a Marvel’s bullpen that would soon pioneer a new age of superhero storytelling — with a nod to DC for reviving the superhero genre (and the Flash) with 1956's Showcase #4.

This gorgeous 9.4 Tales of Suspense #33 sits at the top of a scant 110 copies on the CGC Census! The classic Jack Kirby cover is in impressive condition, with al the colorful contrasts showcased in enduring style. An impressively tight spine also ensures this book's place as a highly collectible Marvel treasure that's sure to be popular at auction.
