classic L.B. Cole Dr. Macabre skull cvr; Kitten's secret ID revealed to Catman
Ruben Blades Copy

The beloved Catman Comics series built a loyal following despite a troubled publishing history that often affected the book's distribution. The book only became more scarce as Golden Age collectors discovered the wildly imaginative covers from the likes of the legendary L.B. Cole. This brilliant work shows off Cole's use of brilliant colors (what he called "poster colors), placing one of his classic skulls before a massive Dr. Macabre looming over our heroes. This is a perfect example — and one of the rarest — of Cole’s striking approach to the comic art form that's inspired collectors to constantly seek out his work.

There's more legendary work as Bob Fujitani takes over the interior art for the bizarre story introducing the very chatty villain. Catman Comics began as publisher Frank Z. Temerson's attempt to cash in on the sudden superhero boom, resulting in a colorful costumed crimefighter with an origin combining elements of Tarzan, Batman, and Captain America. Catman (aka David Merrywether) originally fought crime as a private detective, and later became a U.S. Army officer. He'd also adopted child acrobat Katie Conn, saving her from a life of crime as she became his sidekick Kitten.

In a unique twist, Catman and Kitten were also the only superhero team who'd age somewhat realistically over the years. The scarcity of the run, due to that scattered distribution and WWII paper drives, has made Catman Comics one of the toughest and most rewarding of hero titles to collect. There's also the challenge of Golden Age collectors particularly drawn to those amazing WWII-era covers from the likes of Charles Quinlan and (occasionally) L.B. Cole.

This striking 7.5 copy of Catman Comics #28 is typical of the Golden Age gems from the Ruben Blades Collection, with only two copies graded higher of the scarce 63 copies on the CGC Census. The acclaimed "poster colors" of cover artist L.B. Cole truly shine on this bright and fresh copy, which serves up eye appeal even above its given grade. Collectors can expect fans of both Catman and Cole to be furiously bidding on this amazing Golden Age classic.
