The "tied to the railroad tracks" motif surely comes from the late 19th century travelling troupes that would perform in hastily assembled tents or town halls across the rapidly expanding American Southwest, where railroad workers and farmers dependent on the trains for their business would instantly recognize the imagery. The idea carried on into silent movie serials and newspaper adventure strips, until, by the time of this comic's publication, it was surely a well worn cliche. This is still a wonderful variation on the old chestnut, with the fine line and solid composition (likely from the Blue Beetle strip artist Charles Nicholas) providing a powerful punch.
