Panelologists consider Suspense Comics #1 to be the first horror comic ever crafted, appearing some seven years before EC began its famous run of horror and crime titles. The cover is a mash-up of the imagery that became the standard of pre-code horror and crime comics: a devil, accompanied by Nazis dressed in robes and shaved heads, threatens a beautiful blonde woman bound by ropes as the hero witnesses the unholy scene.

Most significantly, this issue features “Premonition,” the first comic book appearance of The Grey Mask, scripted by Zac Gabel and penciled by Don Rico, in which the wealthy Dr. Malcolm Muir, in his secret identity and with his peg-legged assistant, The Dove, fights devil worshipers and supernatural creatures with a surprise twist! There are also “Bone of Contention” starring The Tracker, penciled by John Giunta, “The Cellini Dagger,” with script by Ed Norton and pencils by L. B. Cole, and other stories.
