There is something very special about combining the words Marvel Mystery with the word "Annual." Printed in NY and distributed in NYC and Canada, little is known about the 2 annuals Timely produced causing decades of speculation. Collectors often daydream about the possibilities of a Sub-Mariner Annual, a Human Torch Annual or even an All-Winners Annual. But alas, they were not meant to be. (Collectors will note that the issue shares the same Alex Schomburg cover as Marvel Mystery Comics #33.)
Marvel Mystery Comics Annual is certainly one of the rarest books featured in the Ruben Blades Collection, there are only 15 copies listed on the census, making this possibly the hardest Timely comic to find overall. The majority of copies of this comic are in PR condition, but finding any examples of this book on the marketplace is a near miracle. There are variants of this issue that contain different interior stories, this particular copy features Captain America Comics #22 and Marvel Mystery #41 inside its pages. The cover, by Alex Schomburg, is another humdinger by the top draftsman of the wartime era, and, even in its rough-and-tumble condition, this classic image still kicks some serious Axis booty.
