All-Negro Comics #1 is an extraordinary document as both part of comics history and African American history, making history as the first title created and published by black comic artists for a black audience. Devised by pioneering journalist Orrin C. Evans in 1947,
All-Negro #1 was presented as an alternative to the all-white (and often racist) comics otherwise populating the newsstands. Evans had a vision of providing young black readers with their own role models and heroes as created in their own community.
Those characters would include Lion Man as the first black superhero (seen on the upper-left corner of the book's cover.) As the alter-ego of a scientist overseeing a uranium deposit on the African Gold Coast, Lion Man was introduced to readers as a character meant to provide “a finer appreciation of their African heritage." The cover also features private detective Ace Harlem in pursuit of Lion Man's playful sidekick Bubba. Evans' ambitious project would get national news coverage, Sadly, this would still be the only issue of this pioneering comic.____________________________________________________
This outstanding artifact is typical of the outstanding Golden Age finds of the
Ruben Blades Collection, and is one of only 34 unrestored copies in the CGC Census. The cover offers striking colors for a rare investment-level grade, with a beautiful back cover promising the second issue that was never published.
