Taking its cue from the title's first issue, Creig Flessel's cover for Detective Comics #8 is another striking example of the "Yellow Peril" trope that lured pulp readers over to comics. (This issue has the concluding chapter of "The Claws of the Red Dragon," in which amateur detective Bruce Nelson stops a Tong leader from being crowned King of China.) The early pre-Batman Detective books were a notable success in the crowded world of two-fisted crime anthology comics. Series regulars like Nelson, Speed Saunders, Larry Steele, Slam Bradley, and Cosmo ("the Phantom of Disguise") were ruling the roost before caped crusaders crashed the party with their assorted powers.
With only 38 copies of this rare book on the CGC Census, this Golden Age artifact has become a top collectible at any grade — and this 5.0 copy from the Ruben Blades Collection provides a sturdy and colorful showcase for this scarce beauty.
