rare! WWII Novick bondage cover, early Archie app. w/ 1st Archie Christmas story (Fall 1942)
There's slam-bang action in Jackpot #7, but also some huge humor history behind that WWII cover! Jackpot—which ran for nine issues from Spring 1941 to Spring 1943—was published by the same MLJ publishing group that launched Archie Andrews in Pep Comics. The popular character soon made the rounds of other MLJ books, with Jackpot #7 getting the honor of hosting the first Archie Andrews' Christmas tale! The story (written and illustrated by early Archie mainstay Bob Montana) is hard to miss, too, as titled “Archie Andrews' Christmas Story." Of course, the Archie empire would go on to dominate the Christmas comics marketplace with nearly 70 years of publishing Archie's Christmas Stocking.
The cover still makes it clear that there's plenty more to be found in this classic comic: “Propaganda!” is a Steel Sterling saga drawn by Carl Hubble; “The Pied Piper” stars the Black Hood from Sam Cooper (an alumnus of the Eisner and Eiger shop); “Pandora's Box” offers a script by Joe Blair and art by Cooper. There's also all the WWII motifs: a cover with a caricatured Japanese villain drawn by Irv Novick, a war story by Hubble titled “It Happened in Holland,” and “The Good Neighbor Policy'' with a villain named Adolf.
Note to completists: “The Will of Don Shorieno,” a five-page humor feature starring Señor Siesta, usually appeared in Top Notch Laugh Comics (Archie, 1942 Series). This is its only appearance in Jackpot. Also, the splash page from Sam Cooper’s Black Hood story has been identified as a swipe of "The Red Skull" in Captain America Comics #7.
