Trivia question: name the most popular, best-selling superhero of the 1940's. Well it s not who you re probably thinking -- the answer is actually Captain Marvel. Created by writer Bill Parker and artist Charles Clarence "C.C." Beck, Captain Marvel, also known as Shazam, first appeared in Whiz Comics #2, Feb 1940. Released by Fawcett publications, "The Big Red Cheese", as he was labeled by arch enemy Dr Sivana and later adopted by fans, sold more copies during and post-WWII than even Superman. Unlike The Man of Steel's alien origins, the worlds mightiest mortal derives his powers from Greek and biblical mythology, his power word "Shazam" an acronym for the six legendary figures from whom he aquires his powers. By 1941 he had his own series, Captain Marvel Adventures, which Fawcett continued to publish untill 1953, until brought low by a copyright lawsuit brought by DC comics, alleging that Captain Marvel was a copy of Superman. Throughout the early Golden Age and WWII, Shazam battled the Nazi's as well as his arch enemies including evil scientist Dr Sivana and the nefarious Mr Mind, all bent on world domination and appearing in this issue. As the character was far and away the most popular with both young readers eager for adventure and soldiers homesick for all-American entertainment, he became synonymous in the public mind with the war effort, as seen in this classic WWII propaganda cover, which shows even America's Uncle Sam was a Fawcett fan! Captain Marvel's history is a long and interesting one, with as many facets as storylines spanning the decades.
