"Busy" Arnold saw an opportunity to make a quick buck while simultaneously buoying the spirits of his fellow Americans who were suffering through the Great Depression. Initially publishing compendiums of comic strips, Arnold formed Quality Comics and went on to produce a line of Golden Age anthologies in 1939, giving rise to some of the more popular characters of the period.
Hit Comics was one of the most-popular titles published by Quality and, as was commonplace in the Golden Age, the book contained a staggering variety of tales from comedy to adventure, and political intrigue to superhero knock offs. The comic also featured the oft-used trope of the "color plus insect" character, the Red Bee, by B. H. Apiary (wink wink). For one shiny dime, readers were treated to just a huge amount of content.
