1940's Shadow Comics #4 is considered a true Golden Age classic by both comic collectors and fans of the legendary radio-show star turned pulp hero. Intriguingly enough, this shocking cover is actually a slightly censored take on the cover of 1936's The Shadow Magazine #103, featuring the full story of "The Crime Oracle" that's adapted into comic form here. (The story also had a radio adaptation in October of 1940.) The cover image depicts the Shadow's pursuit of the detached head known as The Head who creates a crime wave by accurately predicting successful ways to pull off a caper. This comic was a favorite to be shared among the schoolyard, leading to a precious few copies surviving today!
This striking 6.5 Shadow Comics #4 is typical of the rare Golden Age finds in the Ruben Blades Collection, with only 17 copies in the CGC Census (and only 2 copies graded higher). The book's classic cover presents exceptionally well for the grade, with rich colors, a strong focal point, and little wear to a comic that's been around for 84 years!
