Matt Baker's legendary artwork for romance comics thrived during his time with St. John Publications. That includes Baker's cover art for the five issues that made up St. John's run of the Going Steady series. (The numbering was picked up from the book's previous run as Teen-Age Temptation .) This issue came out shortly before the mysterious death of publisher Archer St. John, which would cost Baker one of his most dedicated supporters — although St. John had already started to close down his romance titles.
That's further reflected in how Baker's original art in this issue (for the horse farm romance "I Was a Willy-Nilly Filly") is reprinted from Teen-Age Diary Secrets #7. Baker's new cover remains a typically inspired composition, as two studious young lovers repose in nature with a cityscape behind them. Only 10 copies of this issue are listed in the CGC Census as of Aug. 2024, ensuring that this beauty from the final days of St. John's romance books will remain a top Golden Age find.
