The comic racks weren't always swarming with costumed heroes, even after the appearance of Superman. In fact, non-hero comics were big enough that a whole army of artists made very good livings specializing in adventure, romance, and other genres, among them the revered Matt Baker. Baker, one of the few black artists working in the Golden Age comic industry, was born in North Carolina and raised under the steel-grey
skies of Pittsburgh. After health issues scored Baker a 4-F exemption from military service in WWII, he joined the legendary Eisner/Iger studio and quickly adopted their fine-lined, illustrative style. He refined it into a lush, seductive gloss that made him an almost instant hit with editors and readers. Baker's exquisite eye for detail and gift for sensitive characterization made him a natural for crime and romance strips, which culminated in his legendary run on Phantom Lady. His covers are still avidly collected, most notably for series such as Seven Seas, an otherwise unremarkable adventure title that boasts Baker's trademark classy, strong women and square-jawed, contemplative men. Usually working for smaller publishers with limited distribution, Baker's work survives in low numbers, making every example a rare and highly sought treasure.
