Universal Studios staff artist; Advertising Illustration; c. 1990s; image size 21.5" x 28"During the 1990s, Universal Studios sought to cash-in on their Universal Monsters brand, making a concerted effort to push their beloved horror icons as movies such as: Dracula & Frankenstein saw their 60th anniversaries coming-up in 1991. Everything from VHS tapes, stamps, action figures and toys were marketed, as were Frito/Lay and M&M/Mars snack foods and beer. A special logo featuring six of Universal's most iconic Monsters – The Wolf Man, The Bride of Frankenstein, Frankenstein’s Monster, Count Dracula, The Creature from the Black Lagoon and The Mummy - were created and appeared on many of these products and advertising campaigns. This large and impressive 23-3/8” x 30-1/8” Illustration Board features highly-detailed mixed-media painted original art seeing The Mummy approaching a big barrel filled with “Fun-Size” M&M/Mars candy (Peanut M&Ms & Snickers chocolate bars are seen), popular packaging assortments often given away to trick-or-treaters on Halloween. The Universal Monsters were heavily used to promote various snack foods, sodas and candies during the 1990s, especially during the Halloween season. The Mummy is featured against an ancient tomb background with carved hieroglyphics. The image area measures 21½” x 28”. Each package of candy has small text/logo appliques for the M&Ms & Snickers packaging. Of note, The Mummy’s face is exact in design as to how each character appeared on the 1991-1996 Universal Monsters logo. Illustration board has some corner tip wear and piece of USPS tape on back, but art displays Exc. w/acetate overlay once attached at top (now loose). Extremely well done Monster art.
