Fantastic Four #49 is both a classic comic and an enduring sci-fi masterpiece, as Marvel introduced the cosmic threat of Galactus — here making his first full appearance as the Devourer of Worlds, with a wild image jumping off the racks courtesy of
Jack Kirby's cover. This book also offers the 2nd appearance of the Silver Surfer as Galactus' reluctant herald on his own way to Marvel stardom. Both characters would go on to multiple appearances across the Marvel titles. They're also often credited for playing a vital role in Marvel establishing a presence on college campuses amongst the counter-culture of the late 1960s.
The pop-culture passion for the Fantastic Four was recently revived with Marvel Studios recovering the film rights to the company's first super team. There's already confirmation that Marvel's upcoming
Fantastic Four: First Steps will feature the Silver Surfer and Galactus. Fans only became more excited with the announcement that the Fantastic Four will join Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom in both 2026's
Avengers: Doomsday and 2027's
Avengers: Secret Wars.
