Chas Quinlan classic WWII Hitler strangling cover
Catman Comics #20 would be an ultra-scarce comic just from the beloved title's regular troubles with distribution This particular issue has also become a top draw for Golden Age collectors, with a gritty pre-Code cover featuring a smiling Catman strangling the life out of Hitler while sidekick Kitten swoops in to take out more Nazis. Charles Quinlan's brutal art is particularly striking as a departure from covers that usually featured comical attacks on der Fuhrer. Quinlan’s work also sets up a book packed with classic WWII storytelling, with more attacks against the Axis by the Hood, The Deacon, and Blackout (while Ragman and his sidekick Tiny meet a werewolf)!
Catman Comics was publisher Frank Z. Temerson's attempt to cash in on the sudden superhero boom, resulting in a colorful costumed crimefighter with an origin combining elements of Tarzan, Batman, and Captain America. Catman (aka David Merrywether) originally fought crime as a private detective, and later became a U.S. Army officer. He'd also adopted child acrobat Katie Conn, saving her from a life of crime as she became his sidekick Kitten.
The beloved Axis-bashing hero found a dedicated following despite an often-troubled distribution. (In a unique twist, Catman and Kitten were also the only superhero team who'd age somewhat realistically over the years.) The scarcity of the run, due to scattered distribution and WWII paper drives, has made
Catman Comics one of the toughest and most rewarding of hero titles to collect. There's also the challenge of Golden Age collectors particularly drawn to the book's amazing WWII-era covers from Quinlan and (occasionally) L.B. Cole.

This 2.5
Catman Comics #20 is an impressively rare Golden Age gem and WWII curio, with only 36 copies listed in the CGC Census. The colors of the classic cover remain impressively vivid for the grade, and maintain all the impact of the issue's generous focal point. Comic covers featuring Hitler usually sell for high numbers in general, but this stirring issue is easily one of the most coveted titles among collectors!
