Captain America Comics #16 shows Al Avison and Syd Shores thriving after co-creators Jack Kirby and Joe Simon handed them the title after the first ten issues. That includes a classic cover actually inspired by two stories within this Golden Age thriller, "The Horror of the Seas" has FBI agent Betty Ross and Cap investigating a series of suspicious bus accidents. The story takes a weird turn when the saboteur known as the Hooded Horror is revealed to be exploiting an underwater race of sea creatures who hate Nazis just as much as they hate Captain America. (The King takes a liking to Betty Ross, though.) "Red Skull 's Deadly Revenge" is another classic tale featuring the second appearance of the actual Johann Shmidt. Cap's nemesis escapes from prison and becomes an expert archer while also learning Captain America's secret identity and masquerading as Our Hero to frame him for multiple crimes. The story ends with the Red Skull seemingly plummeting from a plane, although Bucky will soon learn in Young Allies #4 that Shmidt faked his death.

This stunning 8.0 copy of Captain America Comics #16 carefully preserves a tpop Golden Age collectible, with only 6 copies graded higher on the CGC Census! Al Avison's cover employs all of the tropes of Timely’s wartime output in one fantastic scene. There’s the lady in bondage, the punching of an Axis enemy, the musclebound hero, his loyal sidekick, thugs and gangsters, a pool of lava, and mysterious contraptions galore. This cover design hits all the marks that make Golden Age collectors come running. With only 81 copies listed on the census, this VF example sits very near the top in terms of quality and condition. Vivid colors adorn this copy, the hues are as bright as the day they were printed, and the construction is rock solid. This should be a sleeper lot to keep an eye on in EA#61.
