Tom Cook CollectionStarting life in the famed “test” anthology title Showcase, DC’s Metal Men garnered a cult following strong enough to earn them their own book, which was cancelled after interest waned, but the team kept reappearing over the decades and are now the subject of a rumored movie project to be helmed by "Men In Black" director Barry Sonnenfeld, proving the staying power of this unique team of elemental heroes. In the premiere issue of Metal Men, the devious rocket being Z-1, of the Missile Men, send his minions to Earth in search of a suitable mate. Upon the discovery of the highly emotional Metal Men team member, Platinum aka Tina, Z-1 decides to claim her for himself, and attacks Earth in a bid to capture his bride. The other Metal Men (Gold, Tin, Lead, Iron, and Mercury) are able to defeat the evil missile and save their teammate along with a hand from their creator, Dr. Will Magnus, and return to their fashion magazine photo shoot without skipping a beat. The slightly oddball nature of this title is what originally earned the team’s fan base, much to the delight of writer Robert Kanigher and penciler Ross Andru.
