Jerry Robinson cvr/art, Bob Kane art; 1st app. of the Penguin (Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot)Though you wouldn’t know it from the cover, this issue of Detective Comics is a huge milestone in the Batman mythos, as this is the book that first introduced the Penguin to an unsuspecting world of comic fans. In his initial appearance Oswald Cobblepot pulls off an art robbery from a museum, and upon bringing his haul to the mysterious “Boss” of a crime ring, he soon ventilates the mobster with an umbrella gun and takes over his operation. Eventually, the Dynamic Duo join in on the action and confront the rotund renegade, only to discover that he is a worthy nemesis, who frames Batman for his own crimes. The Penguin would go on into comic book lore as one of the most recognizable and popular of Batman’s enemies, one of the few who actually is not a frothing-at-the-mouth madman, but simply a clever and nefarious criminal mastermind. Owning this issue is owning an important piece of history, and the awesome Jerry Robinson cover is the icing on the cake.
