Joe Shuster train cover/art (Winter 1940)


Superman #3 features one of the most iconic train covers in the history of comics, hot on the heels of Action #13 as Joe Shuster's top images of the Man of Steel amidst the railroad tracks. Superman is caught here in mid-leap while carrying a stunned child whose awed look says it all about the Superman mythos. This classic cover also ties into the lead story of "The Orphanage Adventure," which is an assemblage of Superman daily newspaper strips. This classic story has Lois Lane joining fellow Daily Star reporter Clark Kent in going after an evil orphanage superintendent. "Superman and the Smugglers" is another reprint of a classic daily strip featuring the early competition between Lois and Clark. It includes the infamous "faster than a speeding bullet" scene which had newspaper editors complaining that Jerry Siegel and Shuster were getting way too unrealistic. "Superman and the Dam" and "Superman's Phony Manager" (aka "The Man Who Sold Superman") are reprints from, respectively, Action #5 and Action #6.

Only three copies graded higher on the CGC Census!

This 8.5 copy of Superman #3 is one of the second-highest-graded examples on the census. The iconic image of the Man of Steel carrying a young boy to safety as a locomotive speeds through the frame typifies the early days of Superman’s historic career. The simplicity and directness of this cover helped cement the popularity of the most famous superhero of all time in the minds of nascent comic readers. This VF+ copy is clean, clear, sharp, and sturdy, much like Superman himself. With the launch of James Gunn’s rebooted DCU heralded by a new Superman movie coming to theaters this summer, any and all Kryptonian keys are sure to be highly sought after. This issue is certainly one to watch in EA#61.
