Superman #23 features one of the most beloved (and collectible) covers of the WWII-era books, with the Man of Steel about to become a super-torpedo heading toward some terrified Nazis. Cover artist Jack Burnley even dared to show Superman with a vengeful stare. (The kids at the newsstand probably noticed that the cowardly Axis forces had just sunk a simple supply ship carrying civilian mariners.) This striking imagery also sets up the interior tale of "America's Secret Weapon," in which Superman joins some American forces in war games. This kind of classic comic endures as both a pop-culture artifact and WWII memento.

This 9.4 copy of Superman #23 is a beautiful curio of the Golden Age, with only one copy graded higher on the CGC Census! Jack Burnley’s memorable cover illustration perfectly expresses the emotions that were boiling over during WWII. Superman's rare scowl is featured in colors that remain incredibly bright and well-preserved, with the classic cover supported by a solid spine. The issue also boasts enduringly sharp corners after 82 years! These early Superman issues are set to only become more collectible, as well. Fans are anxiously awaiting the launch of the big-screen DC Extended Universe with 2025's Superman, to be followed by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in 2026.
