2nd Joker cover; classic Joker story

Detective Comics #62 features one of the rarest classic covers from the early days of The Joker. Jerry Robinson's striking image of Batman and Robin bedeviled by a bouquet of the Joker's balloons is difficult to find in even an acceptable condition. It's also rightfully one of Robinson's most popular depictions of the legendary villain that he defined in the Joker's early years.

"Laugh, Town, Laugh" is a classic Joker story, as well, featuring the Clown Prince of Crime using his Joker Venom to kill Gotham City comedians competing for a fortune left behind by a legendary dead funnyman. This is the first story where an unconscious Batman is at the mercy of a villain, with the Joker contemplating why it's more fun to not take off Batman's mask. Finger's script also provides yet another fabulous finale focusing on the Joker's mirthful and malevolent madness.

Veteran collectors will agree that Robinson's Joker was always in a class by itself. The artist's pioneering takes on the Clown Prince of Crime were always complex and startling, and leap years ahead of any other renditions through to the Bronze Age. This particular issue is in constant demand, and very seldom comes back on the market after being sold.

Only three copies graded higher on the CGC Census!
Jerry Robinson certainly left a lasting impression on the Golden Age presentation of the Joker, incorporating a more menacing appearance that hinted at the true madness behind the clown makeup and accessories usually associated with less malignant forms of clowndom. The cover of Detective Comics #62 is certainly a memorable moment in Joker history that would set the stage for future iterations of the character. This copy is a handsome 8.5 that presents subtle hues in the purple and gray spectrum that make the brighter yellows and reds really pop off the page. According to the CGC census, there are only 121 copies of this issue on the boards, with this VF+ being one of the third highest-graded examples.
