classic Destroyer WWII Nazi bondage/torture cvr; special guest app. by Hitler; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 7 (CBI)
Mystic Comics #8 stands tall among the most-demanded and scarcest of WWII Timely covers, with Al Gabriele creating a brutal cover full of lunacy. Publishers had learned that anti-Axis imagery would move stacks of comics, and Timely was ready to take advantage of the surefire allure of bondage, torture, and maidens in peril. This issue is also an early calling card for Stan Lee, who brought Adolf Hitler himself into
Mystic Comics #8 and
Mystic Comics #9 as a foil for wartime hero The Destroyer. "Hitler Meets the Destroyer" has journalist Keen Marlow (who's been given a variation of the Super Soldier serum) digging up info by posing as a waiter behind enemy lines. This has Hitler joining his pal Von Maus in going after the Destroyer, with both villains being properly humiliated. The leaders of the Axis were often humbled on comic book covers, but Hitler's depiction here made for a real classic that was promptly handed around the playground. This amazing wartime book only survived in crazy low numbers, and always inspires heated bidding when a scarce copy comes to auction.

Only five copies graded higher on the CGC Census!
The Destroyer was the featured hero in Timely’s Mystic Comics, the character was a wartime creation envisioned in part by a young Stan Lee, which would be his most-notable contribution to the publisher’s output until the Silver Age and the introduction of the Fantastic Four. This is an extremely rare comic, with only 40 copies recorded on the census, and this 8.0 example sits near the top in quality. Al Gabriele’s demonic lady in bondage cover is a classic of the form, employing a trope that was a tried-and-true formula for Marvel’s house illustrators during the era. Boasting an impressive color strike, this book is structurally sound and very well preserved given its 83-year vintage. Fans of Golden Age rarities and wartime action are sure to engage in a battle royale over ownership rights to this cult classic.
