Alex Schomburg had a real talent for encapsulating a story with one image, like the cover to Marvel Mystery #15, which shows The Human Torch bursting through a pressurized tunnel, filled with Nazi soldiers, who are holding Sub-Mariner captive, realizing that their goosesteps are cooked. It’s hard to imagine comic fans scanning a newsstand being able to resist this four-color folio. The issue features appearances from two other heroes that would continue to appear in Marvel output through to the current day, the Golden Age iterations of The Vision and Ka-Zar. Schomburg covers are a genre unto themselves, with collectors paying impressive prices for these typically hard-to-find books, which are always popular items in our Event Auctions.
