Marvel Mystery #15 remains a fan favorite for showcasing
Alex Schomburg's talent for encapsulating a story with one image. The striking cover has The Human Torch bursting through a pressurized underwater tunnel filled with Nazi soldiers who are holding Sub-Mariner captive — just as they realize that their goosesteps are cooked. It’s hard to imagine comic fans able to resist this amazing action.
As it turns out, however, the cover art was actually two issues ahead of the "great new adventure" that would pair the Sub-Mariner and Human Torch "side by side." (By the time that issue #17 was published, those Nazis had also been replaced by Japanese soldiers.) The issue still features Namor and Human Torch in separate stories setting up the action, while also offering the Golden Age versions of the Vision and Ka-Zar, plus the Angel. Of course, Schomburg covers are a vital genre unto themselves, with collectors paying impressive prices for these typically hard-to-find books.

No matter how many different Alex Schomburg covers one sees over a career in the comic auction business, it never gets old to see his stunning and imaginative work on display. This illustration for Marvel Mystery Comics #15 is certainly no exception. The frame is chock full of details and eye-catching imagery. Human Torch is shown bursting through the wall of a tunnel in an effort to rescue a bound Sub-Mariner, one can only imagine the carnage to follow as the tunnel is about to be flooded, which the terrified looks on the Nazi’s faces will attest to. There are only 61 copies of this rare book on the CGC boards, with this 6.5 example being around the middle of the pack. The book is extremely attractive, the colors are resplendent, the spine is tight, and the overall construction is quite solid. Wartime collectors and Schomburg fans are sure to have marked this book off on their wish list, so expect there to be some fierce competition over this Golden Age collectible.
