Win Mortimer cvr; 1st app. and death of The Man With Nine Lives; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 6 (CBI)"The Outlaw Who Had Nine Lives" is Paul Gregorian, the man emerging from an inferno on the cover of Detective #172, he stymies the Dynamic Duo for a while with his apparent immortality, but once his gimmick is revealed (he's a magician) he ends up jumping to his death to avoid capture by Batman and Robin. This twist ending is a bit of shock, but in the freewheeling days before the CCA comic books walked the thin line between children's entertainment and adult themes with impunity. Just a short three years later this book would have been deemed unacceptable due to inappropriate content. This is a late Golden Age Detective issue that hearkens back to Batman's noir roots.
