Zip Comics #5 is another impressive showcase for the original Man of Steel, as Steel Sterling takes apart an Axis air strike right among the clouds! It's another classic (pre) WWII cover from Charles Biro, whose work has kept the rare Zip run going as one of the Golden Age's most collectible series. This is exactly the kind of wild imagery that kept MLJ Publishing moving plenty of comics just when the competition was booming. Steel (who'd immersed himself in a chemical bath to harden his skin and avenge his father's murder by gangsters) also takes the lead story as he saves a factory from saboteurs. Collectors also cherish this issue for a Scarlet Avenger story featuring Texa, the Amazonian villain who only made three appearances in the title. She's seen here in her final story, being foiled from using a dirigible to create new slaves by seizing vicious criminals from Alcatraz.

This 9.6 Zip Comics #5 easily ranks at the top of the scarce 12 copies on the CGC Census, and is typical of the striking quality associated with the books of the Edgar Church/Mile High pedigree — including pages that remain sparkling white after 85 years! This already outstanding copy is also QES-certified for preferred staple placement, perfect staple area, perfect spine, perfect cover edges, and deep color strike. That's all in service of one of Charles Biro's most ambitious covers, allowing collectors to appreciate the innovative detailing that thrilled kids when this book hit the newsstands back in 1940.
