Bob Kane/Jerry Robinson cvr/art; 3rd app. of the Joker; 1st mention of Gotham City
Promise CollectionIt’s difficult to look at this cover and not immediately be reminded of the bizarre “Batman: The Movie” (1966) sequence during which the Caped Crusader dangled from a similar rope ladder while a shark chewed on his leg, leading to his use of Bat shark-repellant on the rubbery rascal. Part of the never-ending joy of collecting comics is the cyclical nature of comic history, where stories are retconned to make sense long after the fact, and the pure fun of learning the legends and lore of the industry. It goes without saying that early Batman issues are rare, in demand, and fetch impressive hauls at auction. Items of note in this issue include the first-ever mention of Gotham City as Batman’s turf, Cat-Woman’s first appearance in her trademark mask, and the fourth-ever appearance of the Joker.
