Allen St. John, Hugh Rankin illustrations back cvr detatched A 15% BUYER'S PREMIUM WILL BE ADDED TO THIS ITEM AT CONCLUSION OF THE AUCTIONMargaret Brundage, born Margaret Hedda Johnson (1900 – 1976), was an American illustrator and painter best known for her captivating cover art for the pulp magazine Weird Tales. Working in vibrant pastels on illustration board, she created the majority of Weird Tales' covers between 1933 and 1938. Brundage was a trailblazer as the first female cover artist during the pulp era, and she remains one of the most influential female pop culture artists to this day. Her evocative pulp art, particularly the iconic "Bat Woman" cover from October 1933, set a new standard for the genre and inspired countless other pulp cover artists. In 1923, a publication called Weird Tales was founded with the mission "to publish brilliantly strange material that can't be found elsewhere." Today, the iconic magazine is renowned for launching the careers of celebrated authors like H.P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, and Robert E. Howard, as well as legendary fantasy artists such as Virgil Finlay, J. Allen St. John, and Margaret Brundage. These and other groundbreaking writers helped shape the landscape of popular fiction and define the science fiction genre as we know it.
