A 15% BUYER'S PREMIUM WILL BE ADDED TO THIS ITEM AT CONCLUSION OF THE AUCTION file copy of legal agreement for MAD "Musically Mad" book project (later Sing Along With MAD); signed off by Al Jaffee, William Gaines, Frank Jacobs
This 19-page legal document from the files of New American Library establishes the original agreement for Musically Mad developed for MAD's legendary song parodist Frank Jacobs and the beloved Al Jaffee — which eventually was published in 1970 by NAL imprint SIgnet as Sing Along With MAD. William M. Gaines is also signing off here with the project being part of EC Publishing's line of MAD paperbacks. This paper offers a lot of insights into the MAD empire, including the revelation that both Jacobs & Jaffee held onto the individual copyrights to their work. (That's in the wake of a 1964 lawsuit that secured MAD the right to publish song parodies to be sung "to the tune of" popular hits.) The comedy legends were also splitting $10,000 to be charged against royalties.
