The wild pre-Code horror cover of Startling Terror Tales #11 features a classic L.B. Cole illustration and a bizarre backstory. Cole's disturbing work is a big improvement on 1950's A Feature Presentation #5, where this book's issue-length story first ran as "The Black Tarantula." Startling Terror Tales gussies up the story as "The Ghost Spider of Death," with Cole's cover pretty much ignoring the actual plot about vampires who turn into giant tarantulas while attacking their victims. The result is a typically great Cole cover that showcases his bright and instantly recognizable “Poster Color” style. Startling Terror Tales #11 easily stood out at newsstands across the country, seducing readers with promises of untold riches within the pages. In this case, that promise was further fulfilled with impressive interior art by Ken Battefield.
