Fred Guardineer cvr/art, Bernard Baily, Joe Shuster, Bob Kane art (9/39)While DC knew that Superman was a headliner, lead times didn't allow for the hero to become the regular cover feature on the anthology title until more than a year into the run. This is one of the last pulp-style covers to grace the series before the Man of Steel claimed top billing for the duration of the series, and the legendary Fred Guardineer ends his run in style with a classic image that hearkens back to the very finest of pre-superhero illustrative imagery. Note that this issue contains a full page ad for the upcoming World's Fair 1939 comic, which served to introduce Superman to the few remaining readers not yet aware of the instant pop culture sensation.
