Incredible Hulk #1 really is the first appearance of the Hulk, as Stan Lee and Jack Kirby made new strides into the Marvel Age — creating becoming yet another Silver Age key and top collectible. In addition to introducing readers to Dr. Bruce Banner and his brutal alter-ego, this timeless classic marks the first appearances of Betty Ross, Rick Jones, and General "Thunderbolt" Ross. (General Ross, of course, becomes a major part of the MCU with Harrison Ford's big-screen turn in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World .)

The iconic cover image continues to resonate with fans to this day. Stan Lee, however, wasn't happy. He demanded a change after seeing the botched coloring process for the Hulk's debut. The second issue would change the Hulk from a blotchy gray to his green-skinned glory. Hulk would then survive his own title’s quick cancellation to keep thrilling comics fans, eventually coming back with a top-selling book and a hit '70s television show. From there, the Hulk’s return to the big-screen Avengers reignited the public’s passion for both the unlikely hero and his alter-ego of Dr. Banner.
________________________________________________

If Spider-Man was a teenage drama, and Fantastic Four a kind of galactic soap opera, then the Hulk was a cross between Atomic age sci-fi movies and late-period Universal monster flicks. Add a dose of "duck-and-cover" paranoia and some good, old-fashioned property damage, and you've got a recipe for cult success. While the initial run didn't sell in the numbers considered to keep it viable in the long-term, the character kept popping up in anthologies and in guest spots, finally landing back in his solo title. Hulk #1 is probably the toughest of the big-name Silver Age Marvel keys to find in decent shape. This VF+ copy pops, there's little visible wear and the book sports clean, white pages as well.

Overstreet Guide 2016 VF+ (8.5) value = $78,000.

Artist Information

Jack Kirby is called 'The King of Comics' for a reason, during his career that spanned six decades he gave us many of the most iconic characters the medium would ever see. From his introduction of Captain America at the height of World War II it was clear he wasn't your ordinary comics artist. But it was his creative explosion at Marvel Comics in the 1960's that cemented his legacy, over a short period of time Kirby would give us The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, The Hulk, The X-Men, Thor, Ant-Man and Nick Fury just to name a few. Kirby would then go to DC and create his Fourth World, introducing Darkseid, Mister Miracle, The New Gods and a host of cosmic supporting players. Long live The King.
