Tom Mandrake pencils, inks and signed; 12" x 17"; paste-ups on acetate overlayThe imaginative and surreal possibilities of the Spectre weren't lost on the monster-mad boomer generation that transformed comics in the early Bronze Age. The cult favorite character was repeatedly rebooted to match the mood of the times, from 60s camp to 70s psychedelia, to Alan Moore's mystical 80s high concept take. In the 90s, John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake melded the Spectre's darker origins with Moore's spiritual elements, resulting in a grim, moody, beautifully illustrated run. Mandrake's sketchy, energetic style perfectly delineates this version of the character and, on this cover, meshes the nightmare imagery of the series' classic period with a modern, aggressive stance.
